Veteran Coach of 15 years Who Coordinated Successful Defenses

Will Muschamp, a veteran coach of 15 years who coordinated successful defenses, both college and NFL, joined the Texas staff in January 2008 as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach and begins his second season at UT. In November 2008, Muschamp was named head coach designate and decided to remain as defensive coordinator at Texas and Mack Brown finally succeed. Muschamp is considered one of the first defensive coordinator and was a finalist in the 2007 Broyles Award (assistant coach of the nation above). He joined the Texas staff after losing the last two years as defensive coordinator at Auburn and six years before that as a defensive coordinator in college and the NFL.

While at Texas, Muschamp led a Longhorn defense that held 25-of-27 opponents under their season average and scored 16 teams to 14 points or less. In 2009, the horns instead of 12-14 under their opponents scored an average and does not allow an offensive TD in four of 14 games. In just two seasons, Muschamp's defense has been presented to the winners of the Nagurski Trophy, Lombardi Award and Hendricks Award, and finalist in the Hendricks, Butkus and Thorpe awards. Three defensive players in the first four rounds of the 2009 NFL Draft, including Brian Orakpo DE (first round), DT Roy Miller (third round) and Henry Melton (fourth round).

Last season, the Texas defense allows 16.7 points (12th NCAA), 251.9 total yards (third NCAA), a 100.5 pass efficiency rating (10th NCAA) and 72.4 yards per game (first NCAA). The Longhorns put the nation in defending third down (26.5%), turnovers gained (37) and interceptions (25), and finished in the top eight of two sacks and TFL. First team All-American DE / LB Sergio Kindle is becoming the first player in college football history to be finalists for the Butkus Award (nation's top LB) and the Hendricks Award (DE high country), while the consensus All-America S Earl Thomas led the nation in defense, tied for second in INTs and was named a finalist for the Thorpe Award. At linebacker, senior Roddrick Muckelroy led the team with 102 tackles and earned all-Big 12 honors.

 
In 2004, ranking third nationally in total defense, LSU (256.9 YPG), fifth in passing defense (157.2 YPG) and seventh in rushing defense (99.8 YPG). Muschamp defense also allowed 17.1 points per game (14th NCAA). In 2002, he has some defense that ranked eighth national total defense (266.8 YPG) and 15th in scoring defense (18.3 ppg). The Tigers have the SEC and fifth nationally in passing efficiency defense (93.9 rating) and ranked second nationally, allowing only 152.7 passing yards per game this year.

Muschamp began his coaching career as graduate assistant coach at Auburn (1995-1996), where he earned a master's degree in 1996. He coached the secondary at West Georgia in 1998 and Eastern Kentucky in 1999 before getting his first job as defensive coordinator at Valdosta State in 2000.

The postgraduate in 1994, Georgia was a four-year lettermen at safety for the Bulldogs (1991-1994) where he was teammates with current UT football staff George Wynn and Donnie Maib. Current UT coach Greg Davis and Mac McWhorter has served on the coaching staff of Georgia during this period. Muschamp was selected as co-defensive captain as a senior and was part of two bowl teams. He also has a spot on the academic honor roll of the SEC in 1993.
